Darn it, let’s take a hike!

Detroit Area Rambling Network is a critical mass of shoes instead of wheels, a reminder that things pedestrian are not dull after all. Established in 2011, it aims to reassure us how safely, usefully, and delightfully walkable our city is, and how it will become more so with every step.

Rambling‘ is a British term for walking through the countryside, but parallels well the meandering, spontaneous routes that can be taken in our surprisingly sylvan urban surroundings. Moving slowly, off the usual trajectories travelled by car, bike, or bus, the low mumbling of the city encourages thoughts not encountered at a faster pace. Plug into the city and experience its everyday amplitude, the things we miss when shuttling along in vehicles other than our own bodies.

Exercise your right to roam! Join us for one of our regularly scheduled weekend walks or keep an eye on the mailing list to find out about shorter impromptu adventures. Some of our walks center on a particular theme; others invite us to let our awareness sprawl and simply notice what we notice in the world about us. All welcome and suggestions for walks always welcome — drop a line with your favorite Detroit places to wander.
